EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can enter Sardinia with just a valid national ID card and stay as long as they like — no passport stamp, no time limit.
Other exempt nationalities can stay in the Schengen area, which includes Sardinia, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa, but need a valid ETIAS travel authorisation before flying — apply online well in advance.
Nationalities not listed as exempt need to apply for a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling — start the process at the Italian embassy or consulate nearest you, well ahead of your trip.
Whatever your nationality, make sure your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area.
