Best Time to Visit Sardinia
Sardinia's beach season runs late May to mid-October. Here's when to go — and when to think twice.
Best: mid-September – early October
The sea is still warm (24–25°C), summer crowds and prices have dropped, and the light is softer for hiking and photography.
Second choice: April – May
Wildflowers, green hills and hiking weather, but the sea is still cool (17–19°C) and some coastal businesses haven't reopened yet.
Think twice: July – August
The busiest, most expensive weeks of the year, with the mistral wind capable of grounding boat trips and ferries booked out weeks ahead.
| Month | Weather | Crowds | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 8–14°C | Low | Low | Most coastal hotels and restaurants closed; Cagliari, Alghero and the interior stay open |
| February | 8–14°C | Low | Low | Carnival season — Mamuthones in Mamoiada, Sartiglia in Oristano |
| March | 10–16°C | Low | Low | Wildflowers start, sea still cold, many coastal towns still shut |
| April | 12–19°C | Medium | Low–medium | Hiking season opens, sea around 15–16°C |
| May | 15–22°C | Medium, rising | Medium | Sant'Efisio procession (1 May) and Cavalcata Sarda; sea warms to 17–19°C, still cool for swimming |
| June | 19–26°C | High, rising | High | Sea reaches ~21–22°C, beach season begins, prices climbing before peak |
| July | 23–30°C | Very high | Very high | Peak crowds begin, sea ~24–25°C, book accommodation and ferries well ahead |
| August | 24–31°C | Very high | Very high | Busiest and most expensive month; mistral wind possible; Faradda di li candareri (14 Aug) in Sassari, Redentore in Nuoro |
| September | 22–28°C | Medium, falling | Medium, falling | Best trade-off — sea still 24–25°C, prices and crowds drop fast after the 15th |
| October | 18–24°C | Low–medium | Low–medium | Warm sea lingers into early October, most beach facilities close by month-end |
| November | 13–18°C | Low | Low | Widespread seasonal closures on the coast; Cagliari, Alghero, Nuoro and the interior stay lively |
| December | 9–15°C | Low | Low | Christmas markets in the towns, mild days possible inland, coast largely shut |
